The musician, who shares son Rocky with wife Kourtney Kardashian Barker, spoke to PEOPLE about his upcoming wellness event

Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian Barker truly hit the ground running in their relationship.
The Blink-182 drummer, 48, tells PEOPLE that he and the Poosh founder, 45, first bonded over their love of exercising and wellness.
“It&#8217;s one of the main reasons we were so close. We would always work out together and run together or do stuff like that together before we were ever in a relationship — we were workout buddies forever. It was what started it all,” Barker says while discussing his latest endeavor, Run Travis Run, which will take place in Los Angeles on Saturday, July 6, and in Queens, New York, on Sunday, July 21.
Barker says his goal with the event, which was inspired by the famous running scene from 1994&#8217;s Forrest Gump, is to encourage people to get active and not to be afraid of running something like a 5k or simply stepping outdoors.

&#8220;It should just be fun,” he says. “Even if they see this, and they don&#8217;t run it, maybe it motivates them to get outside.
After welcoming son Rocky in November 2023 with Kardashian, Barker emphasizes that staying healthy physically and mentally is important to both of them as parents.
“We&#8217;ll do Pilates together, we&#8217;ll carve out a half hour or an hour every day to go out,” he says of his routine with his wife of two years.
As for his own regimen, the musician says he&#8217;ll start his day &#8220;by walking 30 minutes while I consume some sort of audiobook or podcast. And I do the same thing at night because I&#8217;ve always struggled with sleeping, especially after shows when I&#8217;m wound up and hyper. I&#8217;ve just found wellness and working out is so critical for everything that I do.&#8221;

So, too, is eating right, as Barker admits to snagging Kardashian&#8217;s recipe for a “really good avocado shake” that she makes.
“I stole her shake from her,” he says, “and I&#8217;ve just made that evolve a little bit and I made my own. We&#8217;re both really into wellness. I introduced her to matcha back in the day. She&#8217;s introduced me to particular foods.”
In fact, Barker says Kardashian “eats a vegan diet probably about 75 percent of the time,” and that’s the kind of diet he’s happy to partake in with her, especially after she “introduced” him to the lifestyle.

“She&#8217;s been great,” he says. “It&#8217;s amazing to be with someone that has the same love for wellness.”
