This shift in opinion marks a change from Brown’s previous criticism of Trump. During Trump’s first presidential campaign in 2016, the singer publicly expressed discontent. At a concert, Brown said, “Man, this shit is getting crazy. Black people getting assaulted at fuckin’ rallies where you’re supposed to talk at. Trump and all that bullshit.” He also posted a passionate message on social media, calling out the treatment of Black people and critiquing white artists who he believed were appropriating Black culture.
