On March 1, 2025, Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers made his first appearance in the open game, hitting a home run off Yusei Kikuchi of the Angels, a senior from Hanamaki Higashi (Iwate). After the game, he was subjected to a &#8220;reverse prank&#8221; by manager Dave Roberts. The event was shared on the Dodgers&#8217; official social media.

As Ohtani was heading home, he noticed something unusual with his black car. Upon opening the door, a large number of colored balls covered with photos of Manager Roberts burst out. Stunned, Ohtani stood there for a moment before holding up a picture of the manager and chuckling, saying, &#8220;Okay, it&#8217;s a tie.&#8221; Following this, team officials showed him a video message from Roberts, who stated, &#8220;You won the first round.&#8221; He added, &#8220;Do you see this cute face on the balls? I put them all in your car. Enjoy cleaning your car with these pictures.&#8221; When asked for his thoughts, Ohtani smiled and replied, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know, a little troublesome.&#8221;

Earlier, Ohtani had played a prank on Roberts. In a video released on the team&#8217;s official social media on February 16, as the manager was leaving practice at their training camp in Glendale, Arizona, he found a toy car instead of his BMW parked in its usual spot. Initially, he was happily taking selfies with his phone, but when he tried to get into the BMW, he found it locked. After being told it was a prank, he laughed, saying, &#8220;Oh my god. I didn&#8217;t know what was happening.&#8221; However, he quickly identified Ohtani as the culprit. Upon learning it was Ohtani&#8217;s doing, he said, &#8220;You&#8217;re kidding, right? I did say I wanted a car, but did you really prepare one?&#8221; He seemed to accept it at first but then warned with a smile, &#8220;Ohtani! It&#8217;s your turn next! Watch out!&#8221; The photo attached to the colored balls was of Roberts in the toy Porsche.

In December 2023, it became a hot topic when Ohtani gifted a Porsche to relief pitcher Kelly, who had given up his number &#8220;17&#8221; when Ohtani joined the Dodgers. Last May, when Ohtani surpassed the previous record of seven home runs by a Japanese player held by Roberts, he promised to gift the manager a real car if they won the World Series. However, there has been no progress on that front since.
